Got a new computer this week, it runs Win10.  And before I installed any software I installed ProTrak (326) and then an Update (329) the same way you would.

Three steps:

A) Configure your computer

B)  Install ProTrak

C)  "Buy", download and install a ProTrak Update.

~~~
A)  Configuring your computer:  To make life easier, you need to configure how folders open.
- Click the Windows "square" at the lower left of your screen.
- Click "Settings"
- Click "System"
- Click "Display" (at the top)
On the "General" tab, in the top pane, click the radio button "Open each folder in its own window".
On the "View" tab, 2nd checkbox from the bottom, _un_-check "hide extensions for known file types".
Click "Apply", "OK" and x out of the window.
B)  Installation:
I right-clicked on "setup.exe" "Run as Administrator" to start the installation. You need to configure your folder as above so you can see that you are clicking on "setup.exe".
Install ProTrak to a new folder on your "c:" drive.   The ProTrak (Installshield) procedure has a question about where you are installing ProTrak.  The default folder is in "program files" (which we know will >not< work in Win10) so you must type in the folder datafield the new folder name.  The installation procedure will create the new folder.
After the Installshield procedure puts ProTrak on your hard-drive, you start ProTrak itself to register ProTrak and install the databases.   When I tried to start ProTrak I got the error "Missing MSCOMTRL.OCX".   To install and register the missing OCX:
From the "System" folder in your installation package, copy "mscomtrl.ocx" to the c:\Windows\system32" folder.
Now open the "command" window.   Click the Windows "square (lower left).  Click "All Apps".   Scroll to the bottom (of the list of programs) to "Windows System".  _Right_-click "More >" and "Run as Administrator".
Change the directory, to c:\Windows\system32", by typing "cd\c:", then "cd windows", then "cd system32".
Type "regsvr32 mscomtrl.ocx."
You will get a message saying that all is well.
~~~

If you get an error message, such as "0x8002801c", then you did >not< run as administrator.

Now you can run ProTrak, register with your keynumber, then install the databases.   Leave your thumbdrive in your computer until the databases are installed and the main ProTrak menu appears.

C)  Installing the Update:

Go to the ProTrak website and "buy" the Update.  It is free, but that is how it works.  The website sends you an email with a link.  In the email, click the link to download the Update.

Bill Gates will give a big red "end of the earth if you download this unknown file".  Ignore Bill and click "Continue".   If you get the "blue screen" the continue button is at the lower left in an-oh-so-faint light-blue.  Hard to see; tricky that Bill.

If you click the link once you get "ProTrak.exe" in your downloads folder.    If you are like me and stutter on the link a few times you will get also "protrak(1).exe" and "protrak(2).exe" and "protrak(3).exe.   Delete all but "protrak.exe" as (1), (2) and (3) etc are useless.  (So is "protraka.rs2(1), (2) etc.  Save only protraka.rs2 and it must have 933kb.   Any other size will not work.)

Now in your "ProTrak" folder, you will find the executable "protrak.exe" (see, you need to configure your folders.)   Right-click on "protrak.exe" and then "Re-name".  Insert "326" after "protrak" and before the ".".

Move the downloaded "protrak.exe" into the "protrak" folder.   Open the "downloads" folder, leaving the "protrak" folder open too.  (See, you need to configure your folders.)   Drag/copy (Ctrl key + highlight/select with your mouse) the downloaded "protrak.exe" into the "protrak" folder.

Start ProTrak.   Check "Help/About" to verify the Build number.

OK?

              Jim

 P.S.   I find Win10 plenty slick and fast.

The following users say thank you to Jim Moir for this useful post:

And.... before downloading the next Update, in your computer's Downloads folder, delete any "protrak.exe" that is there.  That way you will know which Update is the most recent.

OK?

Jim,   I had originally installed ProTrak on a Windows 8 machine which I then upgraded to Windows 10; I presume that I should back up my data first, and then uninstall ProTrak, then follow your recent instructions?  Is this perhaps an exercise we could do in Lansing?   Jim Brewer

Hi Jim,

I finally got PT added to Win10, thanks to Jim's detailed instructions.

I also had to change the admin properties on my previous data so that it would load properly on the new installation.

Thanks again Jim

At the Weekend, I was able to step people through the Win10 installation and Update process on their computers.   We now have many people who can help others with their Win10 issues.

By the way, the necessary file "protraka.rs2" is on this website available for for download.

The "protraka.rs2" file can be found by clicking "Store", "Update", then click "Update" a second time.  Scroll down a bit to the link for "Registration file".

Sorry guys, but I'm having difficulty installing ProTrak on my new HP desktop running Windows 10.  I followed the directions as outlined in Jim's post here dated April 22, 2016.  I configured my computer, copied the CD to thumb drive and changed setup.exe to Run as Administrator.

I installed ProTrak in C:\ProTrak so it is not in the Program File folder in Windows 10.  The program installed, I registered it, and it opens fine; however, when I go to Transportation\Change Operating Conditions I get Run Time Error 713 looking for MSSTDFMT.DLL

I have copied this file to the System 32 folder, as well as the SysWOW64 folder; when I attempt to register it I get the message that module may not be compatible with System 32 and x86; when I right click on MSSTDFMT.DLL and select properties there is nothing that I can change.

I was able to register mscomtrl.ocx, but I did that just because that is what Jim's post mentioned above used as an example; I am having trouble with the DLL file mentioned.

Need help!

Also, can someone tell me how to edit my profile here so I can change my email address?  I can't seem to figure that out either.

Hi Jim, it's been over a year since I installed updates because we tore down our old basement layout and have since built bigger, better, stronger 🙂  I am trying to update to the current 337 and I am getting a message about invalid build, followed by invalid key.  I do note that my .RS2 file is only 7kb not 933kB you reference above...the version with 7kB is what I just downloaded from this website.

Just a quick followup...it turns out the ProTrakA.rs2 linked on this site is invalid as it's essentially an html file asking the user to renew the protrak.cc domain (since this is where the link points and apparently the real file isn't available there anymore).  I found an old 2011 version of said file and it seems to work fine now.  Maybe something to check for other users.

Looking forward to getting back into using ProTrak and moving freight in northern Maine in the early to mid 1990s!!!

Jim,

I just tried the edit profile option from the upper right hand corner of the wordpress frame (in the black  header), it did not work. I think there may be an issue with the site.

Concerning the MSSTDFMT.DLL file, I remember having to add the file as well.

I have it in both C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and C:\Windows\System32. My file is 117Kb and dated 2/23/2004 12:00am

If yours is older/different I can email you a copy.

Hope this helps

This is what I get when trying to register a file:

The module MSSTDFMT.DLL many not compatible with the version of windows that your're running. Check if the module is compatible with and x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of regsvr32.exe

There is then an OK button, but clicking that just resets the screen back to the command prompt.

My file 116KB and dated 4/2/2002 3:19 PM.

My email is jim.brewer.3611@gmail.com

Thanks.

SUCCESS!!!!! Jim Moir sent me the version on his Windows 10 machine; I copied it to the System32 folder, then followed the directions he provided in his April 22 post above.  I registered the file and got an acknowledgement that it was successful.  I then went into ProTrak and Transportation/Today's Operating Conditions and all is well!

Now I'll download the latest update and install it; then load my data.

Thanks again to Jim Moir for his excellent support.

OK, new problem; I downloaded Update 337, changed the protrak.exe in my original installation to protrakoriginal.exe; I then went to my Download folder and moved ProTrak.exe to my Protrak folder; when I click on ProTrak.exe I get the screen that I need to register ProTrak (just like with the old updates). However, no matter what combination of key number I use I can an error.

What next?

You need to add the Registration File.

In the Store, on the Buy sheet, 3rd line down you will see

requires one-time download of supplementary Registration File

Bob, that file points to an expired domain and is of no value to people trying to run ProTrak.  A portion of said file:

Find Cash Advance, Debt Consolidation and more at Protrak.cc. Get the best of Insurance or Free Credit Report, browse our section on Cell Phones or learn about Life Insurance. Protrak.cc is the site for Cash Advance.

a) Yet one more of the links that need to be corrected.   There are undoubtedly others, leftover from the old .cc website, and if you find such a busted link please let me or Mike Corley know.   One of us will then correct the link - probably Mike C as he is the one who knows what he is doing.

b)  I sent Jim Brewer a copy of the "protraka.rs2" file directly.

The "protraka.rs2" file has been included in the installation package for a number of years now (5?, 8?).  But those who pre-date this time would have needed to download the "protraka.rs2" file >once<.

If for some reason (new computer, lost installation, etc.) you need to get this file, you can always email me and I will happily email a copy to you directly.

Jim Moir's instructions for installation under Windows 10, step b, read:

B) Installation:

I right-clicked on "setup.exe" "Run as Administrator" to start the installation. You need to configure your folder as above so you can see that you are clicking on "setup.exe".

Install ProTrak to a new folder on your "c:" drive. The ProTrak (Installshield) procedure has a question about where you are installing ProTrak. The default folder is in "program files" (which we know will >not< work in Win10) so you must type in the folder datafield the new folder name. The installation procedure will create the new folder.

After the Installshield procedure puts ProTrak on your hard-drive, you start ProTrak itself to register ProTrak and install the databases. When I tried to start ProTrak I got the error "Missing MSCOMTRL.OCX". To install and register the missing OCX:

From the "System" folder in your installation package, copy "mscomtrl.ocx" to the c:\Windows\system32" folder.

Now open the "command" window. Click the Windows "square (lower left). Click "All Apps". Scroll to the bottom (of the list of programs) to "Windows System". _Right_-click "More >" and "Run as Administrator".

Change the directory, to c:\Windows\system32", by typing "cd\c:", then "cd windows", then "cd system32".

Type "regsvr32 mscomtrl.ocx."

You will get a message saying that all is well.

--------------

I do not find an Active X file MSCOMTRL.OCX in the installation package I downloaded. Possibly for this reason, I cannot create a new Home Railroad as described in the manual.

I would appreciate someone sending a copy by email or providing a link to download it.

Thanks!

Alex Schneider
