Hi All, We held our monthly op session on the Nashville yesterday and we had a few things happen that we are questioning.  The worst by far was the NCE system that started losing contact with engines which just got worse through the day.  A call to NCE on Monday morning and possibly shipping the command station to them for repair!!frown But there were a few PT problems also that we would like to discuss to figure out just what the problems may be.

One of the problems that we have been dealing with for more than the last few sessions is missing cars in the yards assigned to a train.

For awhile, I was chalking it up to the crews making a mistake and left it at that since it is too hard to verify what happened.  However, it continues to happen and I have good yard crews who work these positions regularly.

An example of the problem are the transfer trains running between Ribo and Gresham Yards.  Both these yards had problems with this yesterday and it isn't because it was the start of a new session, we are over halfway through this Daily session which was started in April.

A wheel Report (Switchlist) will be requested by Gresham Yard to build a Ribo Transfer.  There were several cars missing and the YM spent time looking around the yard for these cars.  He finally decided to look at the cars in Ribo Yard and discovered that they had already been delivered to Ribo.  This was also true for the Gresham Transfer from Ribo and for the Gresham Transfer to Cedar Hill.

I'm not sure what to do or check to see what the problem is but it is very aggravating for the yard crews.

======================================

Another problem that we had was train 984 which had 30 cars in its consist on the Wheel Report (and in the train), coming out of staging to Ribo Yard.  When the Cutlist was printed there were only 22 cars listed in the train.  The last 8 cars had to be queried to find out what to do with them.  They were all on the proper train and heading in the right direction to their destination.

Before the new Daily session started (in April), I would go to Transportation/Reblock Trains in Staging and check all the staged trains.  I would then print a sheet for each train and verify it in staging.  I would write down the track number, power and caboose on each sheet and keep them all on a clipboard for the Trainmaster/PT operator to use during the session.  The sheet for train 984 showed 30 cars in the train.

======================================

One other problem that we found was that it appeared that trains that are on the Scheduling / List of Train Jobs but were not running, were listed in the list of trainexs in Operations.  Had not seen that before.

All that said, we still had a great time as usual!! smile

Andy,

I reported the exact same problem (but with much shorter trains) to Jim back in the middle of March.  I know at that time he had much greater things occupying his mind.  Didn't Jim B's weekend also run into something similar

Andy noted:

He finally decided to look at the cars in Ribo Yard

a)  Which version (Build) of ProTrak are you using?

b)  On this chatlist, under Users Updates, for "What is in Update 346 and 347",  the second #6 item, the fix for this is mentioned.  The train-consist routines, when trains were overlength (by "cars" or by "tons" or by "feet"), remove the 'overage extra' cars from the train.  Before 347 (April 4th) (and after mid-2016) the overage cars were being improperly moved to the train's next yard - not the current location.

c)  Your ProTrak Operator should be looking at "Yardmaster/Show classified cars" (a relatively new item, in the past year).   The main list shows cars classified.  Also, there are buttons at the bottom, one of which is "Cars moved to "Default Yard".   Cars may moved to the default yard (for various reasons causing a 'lost' car or an error in the data).   The "Default Yard" list shows when this happens.

I will be posting 353 "shortly", either before Wednesday, or early next week.   You should download and install it immediately.

Cutlist issue.

That also has been fixed.   The description is on this chatlist under User's Updates, "What is in Update...."

Weird formatting.  I guess copy/paste from a message no longer works on this chatlist.

>>What is in Update 346 and 347",  the second #6 item, the fix for this is mentioned. <<

Jim,

You posted the 346 / 347 update notes in early April which per your comments today included the fix for my 3/13/17 e-mail (Long train short cutlist) I sent directly to you, because I attached my ProTrak folder for your use in addressing the problem.  It was not at all clear to me that the 2-nd #6 comment was the fix for my problem.

So I'm wondering if when you provide us with a list of problems addressed in your Updates could you include as a parenthetical comment a short mention of what the users statement of the problem was that your comment fixed.  For example (Long train - short cutlist) or (Brewer weekend #3)

thanks

Joe

Hi Jim,

I agree with Joe.  You sometimes identify the original problem and who posted it and I find that very helpful.

Referencing the original problem and poster (if possible) when you discuss the fix in the update would be helpful for us to understand which and who's problems have been addressed.  It isn't always obvious to us that a certain fix took care of certain problems.  If I know that you addressed a specific problem of mine, I can watch for it to make sure that it has been fixed.  If I'm not sure that a particular fix was for my specific problem, I'm not sure if you have addressed it and if I see that I still have the same problem, I won't say anything thinking that you have not yet addressed it.

Hope that all makes sense!! smile
