I would like some feedback on:

1. loading (the car distributor function) for home road cars.

For example, presently ProTrak will send a home road car offline to staging (as empty for load) where it becomes a load returning destined to an online customer.   The second leg of the trip is proper as one would expect a home road car to sent home loaded.   But the first leg (being from online to staging) kinda bothers me a bit.

2.  working yards.

I have written up some draft procedures for how I see Baden, Swanton and Harrowsmith being worked.  The procedures are general and maybe a discussion would help us.  I know it would help me.

Any others?

Hi Jim,

Don't have an answer on the above but a good discussion during the weekend will probably be very worthwhile and develop some good ideas to keep you busy for the next few months!!  Winter's coming, you'll have time!!Wink

I am still trying to work with the Cleanout and RIP traffic and would like to discuss that also.  That would include the "Clean all cars" and "Repair and Upgrade" buttons in "Diagnostics" and how that effects car routing during the session.

See you all in a few days!! 🙂

Best, Andy

Got back from Canada at 9pm last night.   Much construction and detours!  Had a great time.  Layout running very well.  Some cars not so well, but for most part all was very good.  Nice protrak discussions and some good ops.  Also a great bunch of folks.  Mainly posted to say thanks to Jim for hosting.  Also I mentioned to a couple of guys some new paint spray cans from Rustoleum I really like for track, car underframes and whells, etc.  It is a line of paint made for roofing trim (downspouts, flashing, etc.).  There are 6 or 8 colors, but the two I really really like are : weathered wood and shakewood. They are dead flat.  I have only found it at Menards.  Home Depot had the weathered wood for a while, but haven't found it lately.  If only one color, make it weathered wood.  Shakewood is a lighter more rusty shade which is good for a yellow tone of rust. Weathered wood seems to be a dark grey and brown mixture.I have totally replaced camo brown with w. wood for track and freight car trucks.  One of my fellow rattle can users says he believes it will be a short lived line of paint from previous experience with Rustoleum practices.

Hi All, Bob and I got back to Michigan about 3:30P after 5 days of fun on the C&NE with several other fellow Protrakers!!

Each year, Jim makes great progress on the railroad and we enjoyed some good mountain railroading.  We also had a few really good program review and discussion sessions and Jim received some excellent ideas for changes that will be really helpful.

I took only 2 pics.  Here is Bob Butler and Jim Moir running trains.  Next time I will have to remember to keep the camera active for the weekend!!

Thanks for a great weekend Jim and it was great seeing all our friends again and having days of fun to enjoy with them.

Best, Andy

Hi Everyone,

I'm just back in Ottawa on Monday afternoon after a great 5 days at Jim's layout, a trip to the Credit Valley Train Store in Toronto, overnight with son and new wife, followed by several hours on the 401 today on the way to Ottawa.

My many thanks to Jim Moir for listening attentively to our Rwy glitches, finding out what we really mean (ie the causes rather than the resulting issue), and mutually agreeing upon the solution, which Jim is now changing in the raw PT code.  What great sessions we had, usually close to 2 hrs per day, with everyone joining in and adding their perspective.

I ran several trains the two days, followed by operating Baden Yd for the remainder of the time.  What a great lesson for me.  I'm now much more appreciative of the difficulties my operators have in my two yards on the CASO, and will make appropriate changes to improve the operations here.

Jim, your layout has improved remarkably and you have added new areas as well.  My trip over Crawford Notch was worth the price of admission alone!!!

And thanks to Peter Jackson and Joe for all their assistance at Baden Yard.  Several times, after i implored them and others to run trains out of my yard so that i wasn't totally overwhelmed, they willingly and cheerfully carried out the jobs, even though in one case, I sent the train in the wrong direction.  No wonder he never got to the Next Yard!!

Looking forward already to the next update and to the same time next year.

To follow up on John Millers post.

My local HD has the paint he mentioned.

Rust-Oleum Roof Accessory Paint with only the Weathered Wood in stock at $4.77 per can.

The other colors could be ordered, but only in 6 packs.

Lowes has them on-line at a higher price ($6.56) and only as 6 packs

Color chart on Rust-Oleum's web site.
