Hi All, Just wanted to make sure everyone knows that we are having our Protrak Weekend in May, (2nd thru 6th) in Lansing Michigan.

The railroad will be ready for 5 days of op sessions and I have a couple of things I'm looking at for a field trip or 2.  I will give you more info on that later to see if you would like to do that or stay and run trains!!

Please post to the group if you are planning to attend.  So far, I know that Fred K, Mike C, Joe B, Howard G, Bob B and Jim Brewer are planning on it.

If you have any questions, please post them here for all to see.  More than likely, you aren't the only one who wants to know!

I'm really looking forward to seeing all my friends again and having fun.  I may be switching from Protrak to CC/WBs but I'm not leaving the group and want to stay active in the Protrak community.

Best, Andy Keeney

Hi Andy,

it looks like I may be able to attend for at least the first two or three days.

I'm most interested in your new car card system, particularly as it applies to passenger train ops, as PT is still deficient or cumbersome in many passenger areas.

However, I would still like to use PT for the freight ops, as well as for the overall scheduling and control aspects of the passenger areas.

looking forward to settling on the definitive stable version

To all the guys planning to attend the ProTrak Weekend in Lansing.  I have a possible side trip for us on Saturday but want your thoughts before I go any further.

Mike Burgett has offered to have us over to his C&O layout north of Detroit.  It will take the better part of an hour and a half to get there.

Mike advised that we can visit and take the tour, or he will set us up for an op session.  If you aren't familiar with Mike's beautiful layout that has been in magazines and a video was made of it, I can give you some links.  He is an official and in charge of signaling on the Canadian National and covers Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, into Pennsylvania and also into Chicago and parts of Illinois.  Mike also has a business that makes the actual prototype CTC machines and he has a very large one in one of the rooms in his house that controls the layout in the basement.  Mike just had a large addition added to his basement and the layout is finally back in operations after the better part of the year.

Taking a trip over there will be very worthwhile whether we operate or just take the tour.

Please let me know your thoughts and I will get it set up with Mike.

One other side trip is the Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) about an hour away.  The home of PM 1225 and a small museum.

I am open to whatever you all would like to do whether is it roundtable discussions of Protrak, or as many Protrak sessions as we can get in during the weekend.

If anyone would like to present a clinic or a presentation on Protrak or anything else that you think would benefit all of us, please post it here for others to comment on.

I think it would be good to start throwing some ideas around now and would like to hear all your thoughts.

Best, Andy

Andy

I think it would be great to go to Mike's to visit and operate if possible. If we are going to spend 3 hours on the road, might as well make the most of it. While at your place, let's see if we can figure out which of the latest Protrak versions is going to work. There has been a lot of trial and error with different versions so far with mixed results.  My flight out of Lansing is early on Sunday, so Saturday will be my last day. See you and everyone else in May.

Thanks, Fred, I agree that finding the best Protrak version to use should be a priority.  Anyone else's thoughts on Mike Burgett's layout visit/op session?  Best, Andy

I agree with Fred that if we are going to visit Mike's layout, and I would like to, that we should operate there.

I think it would also be helpful to have a discussion about ProTrak in general, especially which version(s) is/are stable. I am currently working through my data with Build 318 that Bob Butler graciously supplied. I did have to recreate my Car Orders, but all of my BOLs were there, unlike with 359. I'm still not certain my traffic is moving correctly, but hope to run some test sessions in the very near future.

My flight arrives Grand Rapids around 6 p.m. Thursday so I will catch up with everyone at Andy's after dinner; my flight out is late Sunday afternoon so I hope to spend some more time that day running on the Nashville Road.

As we go forward I'm not certain that I will stay with ProTrak; I'd love to stick with it and a lot will depend on how my traffic is moving, cars getting filled, etc. I'm open to suggestions for how anyone else has approached this issue.

I'd like to do some major work on my layout by replacing a number of turnouts with to be built turnouts using the Fast Tracks fixtures; as such it is unlikely I could host a ProTrak weekend in 2019, presuming I stick with the program. Perhaps someone else would be able to do this?

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Best wishes.

Jim

Andy,

We were traveling this weekend and are now home. I agree with Fred et al about an op session at Mike B's, also discussion about who has used what recent versions of Protrak successfully, and since Mike Corley will be with us let's talk about the future of the ProTrak forum. I know Mike has some good news to share at that topic.  We are gonna have time to operate on your layout aren't we <g>?

Howdy Joe, we will have all kinds of time to run trains, as much as you would all like.  I will go ahead and setup a session with Mike for Saturday.  Will let you know when I have the session firmed up.   Best, Andy
