After completing a fresh install of ProTrak to Windows 10 and updating to build 360, having an error report when attempting to view the railroad schematic for the initial default railroad.
Not sure if this is a known issue and I can safely ignore, or I need to troubleshoot before starting a new railroad. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Joe
I did some testing tonight an found the same/similar problem.
Fist you need to check and possibly adjust a few items.
Under
The Railroad
Stations on ...
Check that all stations have data and it is correct.
If there are blank stations they can be deleted by adjusting the limits under
Administration
Limits on equipment, railroad & traffic
adjust the Main Line Stations to be correct
Next check
The Railroad
Stations on other subdivisions
again, correct or delete.
NOW try the schematic map

Howard,
Did your steps correct this issue for you? I have reviewed all stations and ensured the administrative notes and settings were correct and still no joy. Still getting the same errors. If this is not a show stopper for the overall use of ProTrak, I can ignore it, but I want to make sure this error is not identifying some other setup problem I may have.
Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, Howard! I am at a lost now because I did exactly what you did as far as reviewing all stations and ensuring the administrative data matched. Was the data file you are referring to the ES file that installs with the base program? I have some thoughts on some additional troubleshooting steps, but wanted to confirm that.
Ultimately, I wonder if this issue will only affect the schematic display function, or again, will it cause issues elsewhere. Put another way, could the setup issues causing the schematic to fail also cause issues with the basic operations functions of ProTrak. For example, problems with waybills and car orders, etc.
I'm just not sure how much energy I need to expend running this issue to ground.

Check Chapter 1 of the PTBM. There are some notes there wrt what NOT to do with the data is ES. IF you are simply interested in seeing what a schematic of a RR looks like in ProTrak look in Chapter 2 of the PTBM, or ask one of us to send you their ProTrak folderJoe Brann

Will do! And I am sending you a PM.

You're making a big assumption here. I wouldn't know where to go to find your PM whatever that is, honestly. Try joebrann@AOL.com subject = ProTrak Schematic

Joe/Howard,
I have just tried Joe's railroad (Thanks, Joe!) and I am still having the same error. I followed the latest manual setup procedures to the letter. At this point, in my opinion there is something else going on in my install. I guess I could try another uninstall/install, but I would guess I would have the same issues again.
Either way, back to square one. If this does not affect operations, I may just ignore. Tough to say, when I don't know what the cause is in my install and what it means.
Thanks to both of you for trying to help.

I unzipped your two data files and imported them to my ProTrak.I was able to open both and go the schematic with no problem.

Thanks, Howard! That seems to support my theory that the problem is somewhere in my program install. I have the same error no matter what railroad file I use. Possible .dll issue? This is my 2nd re-install since seeing the issue. I am at a lost on what to do now. And I am not sure if it is something I really need to fix.

Joe,
I trend to agree with what you've decided wrt your problems bringing up ProTrak, i.e. that it is an install issue.
I know that install questions wrt ProTrak and W10 have been posted elsewhere on the ProTrak forum over the past months. So I'd suggest you search for those and hopefully find a solution to your problem. We all hate to loose a good ProTrak user simply because of an install problem. I currently run W7-Pro so I am of no use on W10 install issues. Maybe if you told us where you live there might be an experienced ProTrak user who is using W10 and who could give you some hands on help.
DON'T give up.

Thanks, Joe!
I did find the Installation sub-forum with all the advice related to Win10 installs. I believe that I followed all the steps including additional files needed from the install disc copied to various system folders. Either way, I would welcome any suggestions. I live near Little Rock, AR. My work schedule is kind of hectic right now which leaves me small windows to troubleshoot, but I can make it happen.
Again, I would appreciate any assistance. I am willing to re-install or any other steps to correct my issue. Still not sure if this error would affect the overall operation of the program, but I just don't know the program well enough to know.
With the thought that it might not be a showstopper error, I have continued working on my new railroad in ProTrak with baby steps. However, I am having what I believe is an unrelated issue getting cars to move on my new railroad. I will post that as a separate topic.

It appears from your other post regarding suitable cars that your are running operating sessions; have you concluded the session and updated the railroad to complete the session? If so, are you still having the string diagram issue? When you are in an ops session there are certain things in ProTrak that cannot be updated until the ops session is concluded.

Jim,
I wasn’t aware of the the updates that happen at completion. I will check this as soon as I get home from work today. Thanks for the heads up!

Joe,
There is a slight change in wording here. We thought you had a problem with a schematic view of your layout i.e click on "The Railroad" on the top tool bar and then click on "Schematic map of (the name of your RR)" on the drop down list.
But if you are referring to the string diagrams showing the stations your trains starts and stops at then that is a totally different story and one which I have struggled with making work correctly for years. There is a true art to entering the data to create string diagrams that are correct. At one time I thought the author of the PTBM had written the best step by step process that worked. If it is indeed string diagrams you are having trouble with most of us I believe define a start and stop time for each train so that in Operations the trains run in the order we want them to run in ignoring the detail so how long they stop at each station along the way.
Please clarify "schematic" or "string diagram"
