Hi,

I've been out of the loop for a while, so I've got a question.  I recently reinstalled protrak and updated the loco files.  I tried to install update 360.  I was asked to load my original cd and enter the registration number.  I know I have to change this number for the update to install, but I don't remember how.

Eliot

Welcome back. If I recall correctly you replace the last 2 digits of you registration number with 60 the last two numbers of the version number you are trying to install.

Joe,

That's how I remembered it, but I keep getting "illegal key number."

Okay.

I reinstalled ProTrak from the original disk(build 41)  It ran well.  I added the two locomotive files, for geared locos and steam locos.  It still ran well. I downloaded update 360, and put it in the ProTrak  folder.  I clicked the icon and it seemed to install.  I got a screen which asked for my key number.  I entered the number, substituting 60 (for update 360) for the last two digits. I was then told it was an illegal key number.  What am I doing wrong?

With an original disc that old, you are missing the anti-piracy file that has your name and serial number encoded in it.

I will need to did to find the correct file.

I have sent you my copy of the protraka.rs2 file.

Place it in the same directory as your prorak.exe

This is an encrypted file that contains the user names and serial numbers that the program checks against.

Hello,

I placed Howard's file in the appropriate directory and I still got "illegal key number."  I realized later that I had another computer with a later build of ProTrak (269 as opposed to 41 which was installed with the disk.)  I put update 360 in the appropriate location and bingo! everything updated the way it should.  I have since copied the entire updated folder to my current desktop machine, and it works there as well.  Could it be that build 41 was too old for update 360 to recognize?  In between there was build 60, 160 and 260.  Anyway, I seem to have a working updated version now.  Thanks again, guys.

I too am getting the Illegal keynumber fault.  My original CD is build 51.   My last update was no. 351.  The ProTrakA.rs2 file is dated 3/7/16

Do I need a new ProTrakA.rs2 file?  How do I get it?

Yes you do.

I'll send you a copy of what should be the master file off line.
