One from only the very best side of town, near Cambridge Ohio. We were doing some fieldwork and came across a hobo camp under a bridge. Which drew attention to the bridge footings/shoe. Normally a bridge shoe is a hinge to allow (slight) rotation and is a special casting (a la MicroEngineering).
Here the footings/shoes are ties cut to length, with the shoe being pieces of rail! I can do that!!!

Jim, the image is very interesting and the thing I really like about this is that we have all the pieces parts sitting in our supply and scrap boxes to duplicate it. It is a little harder to duplicate the commercial style footing that many bridges use.
