The attached (I hope) article was written in 1992.... a long time ago but still relevant.   The article describes AREA spirals and how to use them on your model railroad.   Original tests were made to find the optimum spiral length, assuming HO and #5 body-mounted KD couplers, for all car lengths.

The article was published after spirals so constructed had been in use on the "Nepean" version of the C&NE for 3 years, and thus been proven.

Very interesting article Jim, Thanks for posting.

I have used the spiral curves on the layout using 40 in radius with 3/4 offset.

Trains look good going through the curves and no derailments.

I made a template out of heavy card stock.

Hoping this layout is the last one to build.
