Howdy,

This morning after I installed Windows 10, I ran ProTrak V3.17 and had no issues.  I tried quite a few commands with no problems.  With the next update, I'll test the installation.

So far, Windows 10 reminds me of Windows 7, but faster.

Happy rails,

Mike C

Mike,

Did you make any special settings for Win 10?

Is your ProTrak in the "Program Files" folder (the default) or did you create a special ProTrak folder (e.g. c:/protrak/) ?

Thanks,

Good day,

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and reinstalled Protrak 3.11 with updates to 3.16, imported my railroad which ran good for about a week until I went to do a back up and found that nothing was written to my railroad folder. This got me curious as to whether I made a mistake installing or importing. Did a search for Protrak files and it turns out the contents were being written to a folder in C:\Users\mypc\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86). I tried using the railroad folder in the main C:\Program Files (x86)\Protrak\Protrak folder and somehow the information was not readable. So I uninstalled and reinstalled Protrak again and again installed a backup of my railroad, ran operations only to find the content being saved to the same folder again. So I uninstalled and reinstalled using my own path rather than the default provided and restored my railroad, ran operations and found it worked like it should with nothing be written to the alternate folder. I have tried the same install on my son and daughters computers which also have windows 10 only to find the program wanting to run in the other folder. This must be a Windows 10 issue with the program however the work around is simple, don't install to the default folder on your disk if you have Windows 10. C:\Protrak\Protrak is where I installed mine.

Have a good evening,

Chris

All,

More detail.  ( Been working on understanding Win10 issues lately. )

The original ProTrak install procedure was written for XP, where Installshield defaults to installing ProTrak in the "Program Files" folder.  Win8 introduced some issues with this but still allowed writing to files (all our railroad data) in "Program Files" (32) or "Program Files (x86)" (64).

Win10 is positively fixated in not allowing this.   It also has issues with installing to the "c:" root directory (folder).

Therefore, when installing in Win10, you should select to install ProTrak to another folder (as Chris recommends).   For example install to "C:\ProTrak".  During installation there is the option to select any folder you want, even one that does not yet exist on your computer.   The option is on the third (or fourth) window in the installation.   Enter the new folder in the "text box" at the top (of this window).

If the folder does not exist, InstallShield will put up a follow-up window noting that the "folder does not exist.  Do you want to create the folder?"  Answer "Yes" (click "OK").

(The installation continues as before.)  InstallShield installs five files: "protrak.exe", "Misccal.rs2", "ProTrakU.RS2", "ProtrakA.RS2" and "Railroad.RS2".

After installing these files, InstallShield has a checkbox "Register ProTrak now?".

   - If you click this, ProTrak" itself starts.

    - The first window you will see is the "blue" ProTrak start-up window, then the registration window.  You enter your keynumber and your name.

   - Then you will see the window that installs the ProTrak databases.  Here, you select the drive for where your USB memory stick is (or the CD), from the dropdown of drives on your computer.

   - When the databases have been written to your computer, the ProTrak "Start" button appears, which leads to the ProTrak main menu.

~~~
The next time your start ProTrak you will see the "blue" start window.  The program thinks, finding you in the "protraka.rs2" file.... and away you go.
~~~

I have made one change in the database installation that makes this a little easier.

Also, while I have my railroad data files in "C:
rtop" that folder, while "legal", is not recommended.  The folder "c:\aProTrak" must not be used.

OK?

I installed ProTrak 242 on my Windows 10 Home 64 Bit machine following the instructions.

Installed with no problems.

Tried to update,Change old ProTrak.exe file, copy new file, then run ProTrak. Screen "Reristration required".

Enter the keynumber changing the last two numbers to the update, enter my name and an error "Illegal Keynumber" is shown.

I'm missing something.
