Good Evening & Happy Holidays All,

Having upgraded my computer this year to a 64bit system, I found there is no longer any 16bit support offered by Windows to install Protrak, the installer simply will not run. Also you will get errors if you run at a 4K resolution, 1920x1080 is the largest acceptable display size. My work around without an installer is as follows and will need to be followed by all who acquire brand new 64bit systems in the near future or at least until we find someone who can compile a new functioning compatible installer. Let's be clear, this is only a half work around, as I cannot edit or setup a new railroad but it does appear to allow continued operation of an existing railroad. Your just can't edit.

1. Copy the complete contents of your install disk to C:\Program Files (x86)\Protrak

2. Make sure you have all the necessary DLL and OCX files installed and registered as previously outlined in Jim's past install instructions and posts on this forum.

3. Run Protrak from the directory and make yourself a desktop / start menu short cut. A critical note with this step is to make sure your screen resolution is set to a maximum of 1920 x 1080 or less otherwise you will get all sorts of error messages. You will notice the default railroad which comes with the install is corrupt and named temp route for some unknown reason. You will need to re-import from your disk. This can be done by click the "Import or find home railroads" tab. This step seems to reset everything to a usable state.

4. Update Protrak to the latest version as previously outlined in Jim's past install instructions and posts on this forum.

5. Provided you have done the above, you should be good to go on the newest 64bit computer offerings. You should now be able to import your existing railroad and run it.

Not sure if anyone has a work around for full functionality on a 64bit system. My only other alternative is to install on an old 32bit tablet at this time which is running an older 32bit version of windows. Thoughts anyone?

Happy Holidays!

Hi,

While there may be some issue regarding the 4k display, I do not think it is specifically a 64bit win10 problem. I say this as I run ProTrak on a 64bit win10 home laptop in 1920x1080. I did have an issue regarding the MSCOMCTL.OCX file. I do not recall the final one needed but there are 2 on my computer one in c:\windows\SysWOW64\ and one in c:\windows\System32\.

From the posts I believe it was the System32 folder copy and is listed as modified 3/8/2004 9:00pm and size 1057 KB.

The other one in SysWOW64 is listed as modified 12/9/2015 8:39pm and size 1046 KB.

Someone more versed in Win10 may have better input.

Happy holidays,

John Valle

Thanks John,

I changed resolution which corrected some of the errors I was getting. One specific one is the string diagram of your railroad which will not work at 4K, anything 1920 x 1080 will run without errors and is not specifically a 64 bit issue.

What is a issue on a 64bit system is that anything 16bit in the original core program will not run including the original installer. Microsoft ceased support of 16 bit applications which were previously run using windows virtual machine that they no longer support or include in the Windows software. I had touched on this in a earlier post several years ago as the Virtual Machine was installing and running the files in different locations which lead to a specific install process which Jim wrote about after my post given the changes with Windows 10 at that time when they still supported the program somewhat before pulling the plug all together. I have tried some work arounds including windows suggested virtual machines to no avail. The installer still does not want to run. The only way to run the program is on a 32bit install of windows which means this is going on an older PC for the time being. Not the end of the world, just useful to have the program on the same computer with my remaining work.

An amazing amount of time and thought went into Jim's program, far more than most could appreciate. Before purchasing several years ago, I corresponded with Jim and explained I was looking to run a virtual (V Scale) railroad not a model railroad and sent him a copy of a 6 megabyte Excel spreadsheet which in itself is a program. I had spent many years working on this program and is very specific to my railroad with a set schedule, carloadings, complex customer schedules, calculating revenue, maintenance, etc. I have a 128.54 miles of full length mainline and branchlines to operate that could draw from a roster of several thousand different cars. I advised Jim I would purchase his software if it could replace the spreadsheet program. Jim took the time to review my work and suggested that his program could address all my needs and more such as Car Ferry operations I had yet to implement in my own spreadsheet program. Well the rest is history with me being another happy customer. Having attempted to make my own program and having used his for a number of years till my newest computer purchase when I decided to start fresh again, I can safely say I don't think I would have enough time in my life to implement all the features he put in this program into my spreadsheet program. The complexity in a effort to reproduce realism is astounding. Windows 32bit support will also start to disappear in the coming years as computers manufacturers make the leap to 128bit. I hope in the future someone will pickup where Jim left off allowing his life's work to be used and updated for many more years to come.

Does anyone have access to his working files if someone wanted to work on an update? I am not a programmer by any means but more or less curious what is available to work with if it is available. The simplest fix would be to make a 32bit and 64bit installer which does not really alter the core program. The files are there, you are basically just building a new installer which tells the program where to load files and which registry entries to make. We know what registry entries the program makes from current installs, so providing an update should be relatively easy in theory. As noted I am not a programmer, just want to get some thoughts on the feasibility of updating a very useful program I would like to use for many more years to come.

Thanks

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. wrt your inquiry about access to the source code for ProTrak - the answer is that Mrs. Moir has stated that nobody will have access to Jim's code. It is a massive program to say the least. I recall Jim mentioning at one of Andy Keeney's wonderful ProTrak weekends that if he were to print out a source code listing that it would take over 15,000 pages.

Happy New Year Joe. That is an amazing amount of code and I am very understanding of Mrs. Moir's wishes and respect them. I ended up taking one of my teenage son's old unused touch screen HP tablets and formatting and reinstalling Windows 32Bit over the weekend along with Protrak. I had never thought of using a touch screen device for the program which works fine in this respect and makes it completely portable and usable as a separate dispatch / operations monitor now instead of switching between two applications on one computer when I am running a operating session. I really like the setup.

Thanks for the information Joe.
