I downloaded the Protrak software back on May 6th and I am having trouble getting it to download.  I can run the install program and get to the part where you register it okay.  Its after that when it asks what drive my disk is on to download all the support files that I have issues.  I confirm its the right drive but it won't download any files, claiming that I need the original disk to do so.  Please note that all of my computers at home run on Windows 7 in case that's the issue.  Also I burned the files onto a blank CDR per the instructions.  I can't get past this point to do anything else so any help you folks can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Howdy,

Windows 7 is not a problem. Did you follow the instructions in the README when installing? See below

Have fun, Mike Corley

Product Details

This is the ProTrak file ONLY for new users. Existing users should use the User Update files. The readme file is listed below

New ProTrak User Read Me Notes V2.0

We welcome you as a new ProTrak user and hope that your experiences with ProTrak will be enjoyable. The initialization process presented below is a CD based process and hopefully is a temporary process pending the development of a newer process not requiring the use of a CD.

It should be noted that unfortunately the developer of ProTrak, Mr. Jim Moir, passed from us in August of 2017. So, there is no means to have changes made to the ProTrak software.Use of the forums on the http://www.ProTrak.org web site will assist you in questions you may have.Welcome aboard.

New users are strongly encouraged to go the Users Group / Documentation – ProTrak Basics Manual (PTBM) on the ProTrak web site to access the most comprehensive documentation available on ProTrak. Either read the document on-line or download the document to your PC. The PTBM is no longer being developed or maintained and is current in most cases with ProTrak Version 303.

Installation steps:

1. Download the files into a folder on your PC which I’ll call Folder-PT 2. There should be 32.9 MB of data, 207 files and 7 folders in your Folder-PT 3. Write the contents of Folder-PT to a CD on the PC where you want to install ProTrak 4. View the contents of your new CD and click on the SETUP.EXE file to start the installation process 5. Check the box “Register Now” 6. Enter 4542-7953 after 501- in the CD key number field 7. Enter Joe Brann in the Your Name field, do NOT enter your name. The remaining fields do not have to be filled in 8. Click on Register Now 9. Specify the CD drive letter where the CD you wrote in Step 3 above resides. 10. On the opening small blue screen click OK 11. You are now into the ProTrak software and congratulations on a ProTrak user. 12. In the top tool bar click on Help / About ProTrak and verify that the number after the word Build is 253, click Close. You are now using ProTrak version 253 13. Click on File / Exit ProTrak to leave ProTrak 14. On your PC the ProTrak executable file (i.e. ProTrak.exe) should be found in the Program Files (x86) master folder, in sub-folder ProTrak, and in sub-sub-folder ProTrak. This is the folder where you will want to put the newer version of ProTrak that you acquire in Step 16 and the file mentioned in Step 15 below. You might want to create a desktop Shortcut icon to the ProTrak.exe file for ease of access. 15. Before you attempt to download one of the update versions of ProTrak (see step 16) please do the following * Locate in the folder in which you downloaded the files in Step 1 or on the CD you wrote in Step 3 the file named ProTrakA.RS2. * Copy the ProTrakA.RS2 file and paste it into the folder where your ProTrak.exe file is located 16. Go back to the ProTrak web site and click on User Updates to view the various update versions available for your choosing. It should be noted that many of we long term users are using either Version 343 or 348. When you click on your updated verion of ProTrak you may get a message asking if your database is older than 2008 or something close to that. Note that the No button in highlighted and proceed to click on the No button and you should then be in whatever version of ProTrak you acquired in this step. You can repeat Step 12 to verify you are in the updated version of ProTrak that you selected.

I have followed the steps in the read me file until I reach step 9.  At this point I select the proper letter for where my disk drive is located on my computer and once I click it, that's when I get the message about needing the original disk.

I had the exact same issue and was able to resolve them with lots of help from Joe B. Did you solve the problem already?

No I have not, I am now waiting to see if anyone replies with something I haven't tried yet.  Good to know I'm not the only who had this issue though.

Chris,

Just got back from some travels and noticed your inquiry.  Fortunately "Cowboy" gave me the opportunity to see the "likely" cause of your problem, and more so the SOLUTION.  I'll presume that you were successful in downloading the New User ProTrak files to your computer. Now when you write these files out to the CD you must select all the files and write them out to the CD. Do NOT write the folder that contains the ProTrak files to the CD. Think about from a software sense. In Step 9 when your tell the ProTrak setup software what drive your C is on, that setup software want to see directly the files it is looking for.  IF you had (wrongly) written the folder and its contents to the CD the setup software has no idea what your folder name is and thus cannot recognize the files it is looking for.

Hope this helps. Please lets us know.

Chris,

Welcome aboard, glad I was able to help out.  Remember your resources are 1) This forum, 2) the ProTrak Basics Manual (PTBM), and 3) direct contact with some of the experienced ProTrak users.  wrt the PTBM - Ver. 1.2 chapters are current with ProTrak Version 303 (I believe) but frequently the differences between that version and Ver. 343 or 348 are minor.  The gentleman from Edmonton Alberta Canada who wrote the PTBM had health issues that caused him to have to give up his super effort. Also Appendix L of the PTBM is the Q & A appendix with a gazillion answers to a lot of ProTrak questions posed principally on the ProTrak Yahoo forum which preceded this forum. Jim Moir never had an opportunity to cull over the collected Answers as they accumulated so there might be some answers that are not fully current.

Joe's advice in post 8 worked for me as well.

I had tried (1) putting the ZIP file on the disk, and (2) putting the extracted files into a folder which I put onto the disk. It wasn't obvious that they needed to be in the "root" of the disk on the D drive.

Thank you.
