Hi All,
Just getting ready for a session slated for Jan 30th. Got a heck of a mess in the train room to cleanup yet but it will be spic and span by then!!
Just wanted to make a few comments on my prepping for the session.
Before each session, I go to "Transportation / Re-block Trains / Re-block Trains in Staging." I then make the following checks.
First, I open each train and see if there are any cars that are ping-ponging from staging right back to the same staging track/region. If there are, I try and find out why, and correct it for each car. I won't go into detail here unless it will help someone.
After I've made the corrections, I go to "Transportation / Daily Summary / Re-load OV traffic." I then run the Daily Summary. This will usually take care of the ping ponging cars after I've made corrections to.
I then go back into the "Re-blocking Trains in Staging" and verify that the car's destinations have been corrected so there is no ping ponging. Because of the amount of trains that I have, I may have to do this more than once, but it is quick and very worthwhile to me.
Second, I have 8 road trains that make setoffs and pickups enroute between staging Gresham Yard. I like to block the setoffs into one block behind the engine. So I go back into the Re-blocking routine and check each of the trains that work the yards enroute and block those setoffs appropriately behind the engine.
After that is done, I then print the "Train Consist" from the Re-blocking window for each of the trains in staging. I then use that list to re-block each train in consist order.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jim, the new train consist list that you have created that prints from the Re-blocking window is excellent and I really like the date of printing being added to the bottom of the list. That way, we always know that it is the latest list printed and makes it much easier keeping up with all the paperwork.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From now on, this will all be much easier for me since Jim modified the program to allow incremental unloading and loading of each train as it arrives in staging. No longer will I have 2 dozen trains to do all at once before I start the next session and no longer do I have to worry about having enough trains left on the schedule to run a session with a train room full of friends.
Now, after each session, I can prepare those trains that arrived in staging that day and I will always have a full schedule of trains to run at the beginning of an op session whether the program time is 12:01AM, or 9:45PM. You have no idea what pressure is off me now when I schedule multiple sessions ahead of time. I'll always be ready for a full day of fun!!

This sounds like you will be loading cars in OV traffic twice, for each day. Thus getting way too much OV traffic.
I am curious as to why you run the "Re-load OV traffic" option, first. Curious minds wish to know!
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,
Regarding running the "Re-load OV Traffic" option in the "Daily Summary," I almost always find a few cars that are ping ponging back to the staging track that they are coming out of. So, for my first look at the trains in staging in the "Transportation / Re-block Trains in Staging" window," I look at the destination of each car in each train and can quickly identify any car ping ponging back to the same staging region. In the past, I would find quite a few of these cars and upon investigating them, I would find no reason for most of them to be ping ponging. ( Note: I believe that you made updates that makes this no longer a problem now. )
One day, when I couldn't figure out why I was getting these ping ponging cars, I decided to run just the "Daily Summary / Re-load OV traffic" again to see if it would correct the car routing. It did and depending on how many cars were ping ponging, I sometimes had to do the "OV Re-load" several times but in the end, all the cars were corrected and I got rid of the ping ponging. Each time I ran it, I noticed that there was a window that would show how many cars were corrected in a box at the bottom of the window. When it showed that no cars were corrected, usually, there were no more ping ponging cars. I would verify this by again, checking the car destinations in the "Re-blocking window."
You have since corrected whatever caused this to happen and the only cars that I have ping ponging now are caused by my data which I investigate and correct before each session. Once that has been corrected, and I run the "Re-Block OV Traffic" option, and those cars are assigned appropriate routing.
I'm not sure if the OV routing is changed on all the cars or not when I run this but since they are just going across the railroad, I haven't seen this giving me any problems and it does take care of any ping ponging that I have.
Whether one wants to worry about any ping ponging cars or not and correct them if they have them, checking the car destinations in the "Transportation / Re-blocking Trains in Staging" is a good way to determine if you have data that needs to be corrected. Personally, I've found it very useful in correcting mine.

Hi Jim and all,
Hope the new year is going well for all.
Saw this post and wanted to chime in that I have been seeing the same as Andy. I find the normal daily summary was only loading a few of my cars with OV traffic. I typically have 6 to 18 that should be loaded. Running the "Re-load OV Traffic" option in the "Daily Summary," has always loaded all or nearly all the cars and prevented ping-ponging. This has been going on for about 6 or so sessions over the last year (yeah I need to run trains more).
It would be nice not to have to do the extra step but its not a big deal.

Interesting, John, I'm glad that you posted this.  I have not really seen a need to rerun the OV reload multiple times anymore and it seems to only be needed for cars that had a data problem.  Can't tell you when it stopped giving me a problem though.  What update are you running? Best, AndyÂ

Andy,
I have been running the OV reload since version 314 or 315. I have not run it more than once for a session and did not look for other problems since only a few cars might not have then run normally. It may have only been 1 total and I think it has since been loaded normally.
Stay warm,
