I am a new user. Installed ProTrak under Windows 10. Installed the Update 360 application. Now working through Chapter 1 (v1.2). Get to Figure 1-4 in the "Operate another Railroad" window -- no ProTrak Demonstrator listed!

In step 7 after clicking "OK" the window displayed copy progress but no ProTrak Demonstrator. I did a search for "PRO" folder -- nonexistent. I created a "PRO" folder in the "ProTrak" folder where the "ES" folder was located and reran the New Home Railroad setup. Again no ProTrak Demonstrator listed in the "Operate another Railroad" window -- and the PRO folder is empty

I would note that I never get the window in Figure 1-1 -- requesting me to insert the CD and note the drive.

Would appreciate any assistance getting the demo railroad up and running

Douglas,

Welcome to the ProTrak community. I saw your first inquiry while we were traveling but I didn't have my ProTrak Forum PW with me at that time. Yes I know that was bad form <g>. I thought I had it memorized but....

Anyway a couple of comments

1. Glad that you are working thru the PTBM successfully. Doug Seymour, from way up in NW Canada, did a fantastic job in writing the PTBM. I helped Doug with the editing of the document as he developed it. Remember that the PTBM is current wrt ProTrak Version 303, I believe.  So you will see some differences in the screen images he presents.

2. You mentioned that you are using ProTrak Ver. 360 (OUCH). Most of us in the long term ProTrak community do not use anything beyond Ver. 348.  Jim Moir did a massive update to ProTrak in Version 350 following a ProTrak Weekend in the spring of 2017.  Most of us do not think that the impact of all those changes had ever been fully ferreted out before Jim's passing almost two years ago.  I spent several months this spring vacillating between Ver. 352 and 348 and settled on Ver. 348. Jim Brewer another long term ProTrak user and a member of this forum brought to my attention this spring that Jim Moir said to NEVER go from one version of ProTrak DOWN to an older version.  Thus if you are just following the PTBM and building the Pro Demonstrator railroad you are certainly free to continue on with Ver. 360.  HOWEVER when you get ready to build the ProTrak Data Folder (PDF) for you own layout may I kindly urge you to go way back and redownload the new user zip file which you obviously did once successfully in the past, and then do the Ver. 348 User Update.  A significant benefit of using Ver. 348 when you build the PDF for your own layout is that if you need help you could send the PDF for your layout to any of us and ask for help. In early August I helped one of our other new members with his PDF, but he had used ProTrak version 253, the version in the new user download zip file, and I was using Ver. 348. I'm 99+% sure that some of the things I saw in his PDF, that I didn't expect a new user to be familiar with, were caused by the different versions of ProTrak he and I were using. A simply change in the format/meaning of control bits, user option bits, status bits etc. internal to ProTrak between two versions can make a big difference.

Thanks Joe

I will keep your advice re: swithcing to Ver. 348 of EXE file in mind when I start working on my own layout.

Wonder if you can help me on 2 items:

1. Part 1 Introduction mentions that the addition of a branchline will be address in Part 2 -- how do I get Part 2 and information on adding a branchline?

2. Chapter 7 ends with a note that information on importing cars can be found in Appendix N -- how do I get Appendix N -- not in the Basic Manual list of files

Douglas.

1. As far as I can recall there never was a Part 2, nor App. N. Ill health befell Doug Seymour and his grand plans were terminated.

2. But wrt branch lines try clicking on The Railroad / Subdivisions Junctions, Names and Notes. Hopefully that will let you set up a junction point to a branch line.  I have two on my layout.

3.Importing car data w/o Appendix N -  Get Version 1.2 of Appendix L which is a compendium of Questions from ProTrak users and Answers from Jim Moir.  These Q-s and A-s came from the old Yahoo ProTrak site and also from the newer ProTrak forum over a long period of years. Look on page L-75 for information in importing cars.

4. Keep Appendix L Ver 1.2 handy as it has a lot of valuable and useful information.

All, count me in as a fairly happy v360 user.  I've run hundreds of paper sessions and dozens of actual operating sessions on v360 over the last two years and I'm fairly pleased with its stability, all things considered.  I keep a log of cars moved per session in each direction/service to monitor when things get off track.  Occasionally I blow away and rebuild the train lineup file.

I do wish we could access the source code to better understand the inner workings and nuances of each version...this would be for personal, non-commercial use.  I'm a former VB developer and would love to dive in...

Thanks for sharing your success with ProTrak Ver. 360. Did you start using ProTrak with Version 360 or did you progress up from older versions? Shortly after Jim passed away almost 2 years ago his widow directed that the source code was not to leave the family. Also the code is massive. I recall at a ProTrak weekend about 6 years ago at Andy Keeney's massive and wonderful Nashville Road layout Jim commented that if he were to print the source code for ProTrak it would take over 15,000 (15K) pages.  That's a lot of trees.

Joe, I progressed up through to v360.  As I recall, I was in touch with Jim quite a bit in those months and years prior to his passing, finding issues in the program, sharing my data with him, and him making corrections based on those interactions...perhaps hence why I'm comfortable with v360 as I do believe in fact it contains corrections to some issues I was able to document for him.

I completely understand and respect the wishes that the source code not leave the family, but personally I see stepping through the code as a way to celebrate Jim's legacy, and the wonderful program he created for us, while also potentially improving it (or at least better understanding it) for future users.  I get that there's a lot of code, but that shouldn't be a deterrent, I think our small circle of PT users has some experienced VB developers who could make the task worthwhile.  No one in their right mind would print source code out anyway.

Anyhow, my 2 cents.
